Curled fox with heart and script
Colour · Flash
A curled fox rests with its eyes closed and tail wrapped around its body, its paws raised towards a small red heart. Soft orange shading and dark linework define the fur, and handwritten script wording wraps around the figure in a loose circle on a pale cream background.

Sit nearer the stove, you lot, and mind the kettle, because this one is long and I'll not tell it twice. The Mabel Jane was tied below Ely the winter the Ouse froze at the edges, and aboard her was a vixen nobody had invited. Old Walter Greaves found her curled in the coal bunker one morning, tail wrapped round her nose like a scarf against the frost, and he said, 'Well, she's paid her fare in warmth at least.'

She stayed. She slept on the warm lid of the engine box, took bread from Nell's hand, and never once bit anyone. Walter talked to her as though she were a lodger with opinions. Every night before he turned in he'd lean over the rail, tap the hull twice, and say, 'Keep me in your heart, mind, till I'm back.' The fox would lift her head and look at him with those narrow eyes, then tuck her muzzle under her tail as if the matter were settled.
In the spring the ice went out with a crack like a rifle, and Walter took ill at Upware with his chest. Nell brought the boat on alone to Ely with the tiller under one arm and the cabin lamp swinging. The fox was gone from the engine box that morning. Nell searched the hold, the cabin and the coal, and found nothing but a scrap of red wool caught on the rail.
Walter lived another eleven years, and in the last of them he asked to be carried up on deck at dusk. There on the lock bank, curled on the warm stones with its tail over its nose, lay a fox. It did not run. Nell swears it lifted its head, looked straight at the bargeman, and then tucked its face back under its tail. Walter tapped the rail twice and smiled. 'Keep me in your heart,' he said, and that was the last thing anyone heard him say.
