Never look back in script on the arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words Never look back written in a thin, looping cursive script across two lines. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The phrase sits centred on a close crop of skin, with a plain grey fabric and a light background at the edges.

Mind the step on the landing, it's loose, it has been loose since before your mother was born and nobody from the council has come to see it. Sit down there, the chair with no springs. Now. Ada Platt lived on the nineteenth floor of Fenwick House, and the lift had died for good the winter she turned fourteen, so every bag of shopping that came up those stairs came up on her hip.

Her gran had a rule for everything, scratched in biro on the back of a gas bill and stuck to the fridge. Eat before you go out. Wear your coat. Never look back. Ada thought it was about the stairs, about not stopping to count the landings, because her gran had a bad chest and a worse temper and she did not like to be watched while she climbed. When the place in the bakery on Mill Road came up, Ada took it, and on the morning she left she got the bus from the bottom of the estate with a holdall and a tin of her gran's shortbread.
The bus pulled out past the bins and the boarded shop and the football cage where the boys still kicked a ball against the wire at seven in the morning. Ada sat with her forehead against the cold glass and did not turn round. She kept her eyes on the road in front, the way her gran had shown her, and counted the lamp posts instead, forty-one of them, then the roundabout.
Forty years on she still has that gas bill. The biro has faded to a grey smudge, but you can read it if you hold it to the light. Eat before you go out. Wear your coat. And at the bottom, underlined twice, the bit she always forgot to mind: Never look back, love, but do look up. Now that's a rule I'd like you to take home with you. Mind the step.
