Black script tattoo reading my story isn't over yet with a semicolon above its end, across a forearm.

Semicolon and script quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pale forearm carries the phrase "my story isn't over yet" in black cursive lettering, running diagonally up the arm. A solid black semicolon sits above the end of the phrase. The linework is fine and even with no visible shading, set against a dark, plastic-wrapped background.

Dear Maureen,

The council man came on Thursday with his clipboard and his tidy grey tie, and he stood on the platform telling me the line will close at the end of the month as though I had not been here for thirty-one years. I let him finish. Then I took the chalk from my coat pocket and wrote a small mark beneath the word CLOSED on the timetable board. Nothing grand, just a dot and a comma, the way you taught me to mark a pause in a sentence when you were not ready to end it.

You always said a semicolon was a full stop that thought better of itself. I think you would like the board now. It looks like someone has been arguing with the notice and has not yet lost.

Yesterday a girl of about nine stepped off the Carrick train with a lunchbox and a library book, and she asked me, very seriously, whether the trains would still stop here. I told her the truth, which is that nobody knows. She nodded as if that was the most sensible answer she had heard all week, then sat on the bench under the clock and read with her feet swinging.

I have left the lamp in the booking hall burning and the kettle on the shelf. If the 6.42 ever comes back, it will find the door open and a cup of tea waiting. Tell your sister the chalk is in the drawer if she wants to add a line of her own.

Yours, as ever, Walter
