Night sky with UFOs and pines on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular design shows a night scene with a crescent moon, scattered stars, two flying saucers with glowing undersides and a row of pine trees along the bottom. The image is built from fine dots and stippled shading that give the sky and moon soft gradients, while the saucers and trees have crisper outlines. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a dark, textured background, centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been falling since the bus left you at the lay-by, and by the time the Hollin Gate Inn's lamp came into view the drifts had reached your knees. Mrs Ferrers took your wet coat without asking and hung it by the stove, where the last of the coal sulked behind the grate. "Room four is yours," she said. "Don't open the shutters past midnight. The pines throw a shadow that the frost doesn't like."

You did not take her seriously until you couldn't sleep. The wind had dropped and the sky cleared to a hard, starred black. A crescent moon hung above the ridge, pale as a fingernail, and below it two low saucers of light drifted between the pine trunks, slow as thoughts, their undersides glowing a cold white. You watched them settle in the clearing behind the byre. Something moved between the trees, tall and patient, and the lights dimmed one after another like lamps being turned down in a house.

At breakfast the landlady set down porridge and did not look at the window. "Walter's boy saw them in fifty-one," she said. "Walked out in his socks to meet them. They gave him back in the spring, a hand taller and unable to recall his own mother's name." She poured your tea. "Don't go looking for them. They only come to those who've been looking up."

You finished the tea. Outside, the snow had stopped, and the clearing behind the byre lay smooth and white, with no marks in it at all except a single line of small, neat prints leading up from the pines to your door, and stopping there, as if someone had waited for you to answer.
