Campervan and campfire night scene in a circle

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular scene shows a campervan parked beside a pine forest, with a glowing moon and stars in the night sky above and a campfire with a log in the foreground. Tall tree trunks frame the circle on either side, and the mountains behind the forest are rendered in fine dots. The piece is done in solid black outlines with stippled dotwork shading and no colour, and the image is sharply focused against a plain white shirt and denim.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Garrow Bridge had seen a camper van on the Keld road before, so when the blue one rolled into the Crown car park with its engine ticking and no driver, I went out to look before Mr Pryce could lock up. The side door was unlatched. Inside, a tin of pear drops had spilled across the bench seat, and an atlas lay open at a page where someone had ringed a place called Ravensmoor in pencil. I closed the door gently, as if the van might wake.

I followed the wheel tracks up past the sawmill and into the pines, where the ground rose and the mountain sat behind the trees like something asleep. The fire was still warm when I reached it. A pan of cold beans sat on a flat stone, and a split log lay on the far side, as if someone had only just stepped off to fetch water. The moon came up over the ridge so bright I could count the stones around the ring, and I sat down on the log to wait, because that seemed the polite thing to do.

The owner came back at first light, a thin man in a fawn coat carrying two tins of paraffin. He didn't ask who I was. He nodded at the van, then at the fire, and said his wife used to tell the stars apart by name. When I asked where they had been going, he only said he had been going there for twenty years and never arrived. He walked off down the track on foot, leaving the keys on the log beside me, and I still have them in my coat pocket.
