By the second week of September the wasps had found the windfalls and the air over the grass smelled like cider and rot. You walked the rows with a bucket and counted the blossom scars, the little star-shaped marks where each flower had given up its hold. Some were silhouettes, dark and full. Others had opened into lace, every petal outlined so finely that the light went straight through. Your grandfather had called the first kind the working trees and the second kind the ones that showed off.
The graft took. You know because in October a single green shoot pushed out from the join, six leaves on it already, and you stood in the cold with the bucket knocking against your knee and laughed at it like a fool. Nobody else came out to see. You picked the first apple from that branch, sharp and yellow-skinned, and bit it right there beside the stump, and it tasted of exactly the tree it had come from.
