A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lace-maker's daughter had been promised to the miller's son since the spring the river rose, and by the week of the wedding there was still no veil. Her mother sat up with the thread every night, but the bobbins kept tangling, and the old woman who sold them in the market said the pattern was wrong for a bride. Too many petals, she said, and no room for the eye to rest.

On the eve of the wedding the girl went down to the water with a pair of scissors and a pocketful of seed. She cut a flower from a sheet of black paper she had kept from the printer's shop, six pointed petals and a round dark centre, and she pressed it to the riverbank with wet hands. Then she began to draw curls from the stems, small curls that turned back on themselves, and at the tip of each curl she set a ring of dots, one, two, three, until the bank looked like a page of someone else's handwriting.

Her mother found her at dawn, sleeves rolled, soaked to the elbow, and said nothing about the ruined paper. The miller's son came down behind her and stood looking at the leaves, which were sharp and fine and had hatched lines running through them like rain on glass. He asked whose work it was. The girl said the river's, and that she had only held the pen.

They were married under it that afternoon, and the veil she wore was made of nothing but the shadows the flower threw on the grass, which the old woman swore was the first lace she had ever seen that did not need to be mended.
