The last tram leaves you under the railway arches at a quarter to one, and the drawings are still buttoned inside your coat where Mr Adebayo pressed them into your hand. Twelve sheets, folded in four, with a warning not to open them until you were home. You do not go home. You stand under a sodium lamp, hunched against the wet, and unfold them one circle at a time, the ink still tacky at the petals.

Every one is a rosette of black ink, petals stacked on petals, stars cut from the centre like spokes. He drew one each night for a year in the room above his shop, where the radiator knocked and the pawned clocks ticked through the floor. He never explained them. He only said that a circle with nothing in the middle is a door that has forgotten its house, and these were the houses he had not yet built.

You count the dots on the third sheet, then the fourth. Thirty-one on the one with the eight-point star, set in a ring that wobbles where his hand must have shaken. You have walked this street a thousand times, and slowly you see that the ring is the street: the bus shelter, the chip shop with its buzzing sign, the blue door, the humped bridge over the canal. Each dot sits where a lamp stands. Someone has drawn your route home in the language of rose windows.

The lamp above you gutters and goes out. Down the road, one after another, the streetlamps flicker back on, in exactly the order of the dots, and at the centre of the rosette, where the stars meet, the pawnbroker's shutter is already glowing.
