No day but today lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the inner forearm and wrist of a person, with the words no day but today tattooed in black ink in a typewriter-style serif typeface. The lowercase letters are bold and evenly spaced, running diagonally up from left to right across the forearm. The skin is pale and the background is a blurred indoor room with a striped rug, a blue cloth and wooden furniture.

Frost had furred the gate latch again, and Nell Harcourt worked her glove under the iron until it gave. Below the ridge the ewes were already bunched by the hay ring, breath standing over them in the grey light. She counted them twice, the way her father had taught her, and got the same number both times, which was more than she could say for the accounts in the kitchen drawer.

The typewriter sat on the scrubbed table where Dad had left it, its ribbon dried to the colour of weak tea. For three weeks she had let the post pile up beside it unopened. Tonight, after the last feed, she found a card pinned above the keys, the corners soft from handling, and in his square capitals he had typed a single line: NO DAY BUT TODAY. She had no idea whether he meant it as a joke about the sheep or a sermon to himself. Either way, it was on the card now, and she was the one who had to read it.
She rolled a clean sheet in and typed to Tom Eskdale at the far farm, asking if he would take the Dexter bull before the spring sale. She hunted each key slowly, and when she reached the end she sat with her fingers hovering and did not let herself read it back. She sealed it, pulled her boots on over two pairs of socks, and walked the lane in the dark to the postbox at the crossroads.
In the morning there was a reply tucked under the feed bin, in a hand she half recognised. Tom would come Thursday with the trailer. Nell read it twice, folded it into her coat pocket, and went to find the shovel, because the lane would need clearing before anyone could drive it.
