Psalm 23:4 quote on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script tattoo sits across the inner forearm, reading For thou art with me, with a plus sign and Ps 23:4 on a second line beneath. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering is set on a slight diagonal. The skin is pale and lit by strong sunlight, with a grey knitted sleeve and dark fabric in the foreground and background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Hanno had sharpened his reed twice before Miriam stopped at the scribe's door with her son, a thin boy of nine called Eli who kept pulling his sleeve down over the wrist. The lower pastures had lost two ewes to wolves that month, and the boy was to walk the flock over the ridge at first light. She wanted words on his arm, the same ones her husband had murmured when he carried a lamb home through the rain.

Hanno mixed soot with gum and oil in a clay dish. He laid the forearm flat on a warm stone and began with thin strokes and no shading, because the old men said a line that wanted shading was asking for trouble. The arm was tilted and he would not bend a child's wrist to suit his letters, so the words ran downhill across the skin like a path. Eli watched the reed and asked whether it hurt. Hanno said it went no deeper than a thorn, which was a lie, but a small one. Before the reference he set a plus mark, the way copyists did to show where a verse began.
The next dawn the boy went up the ridge with the flock, and the sky turned the colour of wet slate. Rain came sideways. By noon the path had gone to mud and the valley below was a bowl of shadow, and Eli stood at the top with the ewes bunched behind him, sure he had lost the track. He pushed his sleeve back and held the arm up to what light there was. He could not read the letters through the rain, but he did not need to. He had watched them go on, so he traced the slant with his thumb, letter by letter, and found the descent with it.
He came down by dusk with every ewe counted. Hanno saw the faded words when Eli brought the flock back to the fold, and the boy said only that the ink had kept its direction.
