Normal People Scare Me lettering on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a tattoo on the inside of a wrist, with the words NORMAL PEOPLE SCARE ME stacked over three lines. The letters are blocky, with plain strokes and small dots placed between some characters, and the ink is solid black. The greyscale photo is sharply focused and the skin tones are softened, so the lettering stands out clearly against the pale wrist.

The gate at Saint Ebba's had words cut into its oak, painted over so often the letters stood proud of the wood: NORMAL PEOPLE SCARE ME. Brother Tobias had carved them the winter the miller's wife walked up the fell, smiling, and called each of the brothers by his childhood name. Nobody could say what was wrong with her. She was kind. She was entirely ordinary. That was the trouble.

The monks took turns at the gatehouse, and each keeper kept the ledger of comers, setting a dot beside any name he could not account for. By the time young Hugh was given the post there were three pages of dots. Hugh thought the old rule foolish. He liked people. He liked the carter who sang psalms badly and the widow who left honey on the step, and he wrote their names with no dots at all.

In October a man came up with a grey mule and a good wool coat. He knew Hugh's mother's name and asked for nothing. He sat by the kitchen fire and laughed in all the right places, and when he left, Hugh found he could not recall the shape of the man's face, only the coat. He opened the ledger. The name was there with no dot beside it. He sat up all night with a candle, then took up the pen and marked it himself.

In spring they found the grey mule grazing at the bottom of the valley, saddle still on, and no man anywhere near it. Brother Tobias climbed to the gate with his brush and added a stop after each word, as if the rule had never been finished. Hugh wrote every name after that with a dot beside it. The ledger was full by Lent.
