The image shows the inner wrist and forearm, with the words NORMAL PEOPLE SCARE ME tattooed across the skin in uppercase block letters. The photograph is black and white, with several leather and metal bracelets worn just below the tattoo against a soft fabric background.

Verity Pell had painted boat names on the Mousehole slip for thirty years, and she could tell a skipper's character from the lettering he chose. Dougie Ansty wanted his new boat, the Gentle Ann, done in gold leaf with a black shadow, and he stood with his arms folded while she worked the serifs. "Plain for me," he said. "Nothing fancy. People round here are no bother."

She didn't answer. She was thinking about the man from Penzance who had come in the week before with a sketch for a mermaid and a deadline of Friday. He had talked the whole time about his neighbours, how they left their bins at the wrong angle and smiled at him over the hedge as if counting his teeth. He'd tapped the bench and said, "Normal people scare me, Mrs Pell. Put that on something I can look at," and she had lettered it on a scrap of card to show him the face she'd use, then forgotten to hand it back.
Dougie watched the brush move. The tide crept over the slipway while she worked, and gulls walked the wet stones as if they held the deeds to the parish. When she sat back and wiped her hands, he read the name twice and frowned at the transom, where she had painted, in a small grey hand beneath the gold, a line she had never painted on any boat before.
He laughed, a short bark that set the gulls lifting. "Every man on the quay will read that before he reads my name." He patted the wet paint with one knuckle, carefully, the way a man does when he means to keep something. "Good. Let them wonder who I'm frightened of."
