Quote lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a forearm with a single line of black uppercase lettering reading NORMAL: PEOPLE SCARE ME. The letterforms are a clean, blocky sans serif with solid black ink and no shading. The background is softly out of focus, showing a tree trunk and green foliage, and the arm is lit by dappled sunlight.

The relief boat came over the swell on the third Tuesday of March, and I watched it from the gallery with the glass to my eye, counting heads the way other men count pints. Four passengers. I went down to the landing with my hands in my pockets and told them the rope was fraying, which it was, and that the stairs were a hundred and twelve, which they were not.

Mrs Pell from the mainland office had written to me in January asking whether I was 'comfortable with company'. I had replied that I was comfortable with the lamp, the gulls and the tide tables, and that company was a matter of logistics. She had underlined logistics. Now the cat was looking at me the way the gulls did, as if I were a particularly dull piece of furniture.
The man from the Board wanted to know about the damp in the store room. I wanted them all off the rock by four. Over supper, the woman, whose name was Ilse and who had clearly been told the same things about me, asked why I kept the brass polished when nobody came to look at it. I said polishing gave my hands something to disagree with. She laughed, which I had not planned for.
That night I climbed to the lamp room and found someone had chalked a line on the iron door in capitals, square and plain: NORMAL: PEOPLE SCARE ME. It was not my handwriting. Ilse was asleep below with the cat on her feet. I left it there until morning, and when the boat came back I was standing at the rail, and for once I did not count the heads.
