Oak leaf line drawing on paper
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A single oak leaf is drawn in black ink on textured white paper, with a central midrib and lobed edges. Fine parallel hatching lines fill each lobe to suggest shading and veins, and the stem is left as a plain line. The leaf is centred on the page with generous white space around it.

The leaf came off the old oak at the far hedge of Pardoe's orchard on the third of September, and Mrs Pardoe made me sit with it on the back step until the rain passed, because she said you could not draw a lobe you had not first held. I held it by the stalk. The edges had gone the colour of weak tea, but the lobes were still firm, each one blunt as a thumb, and the veins ran out from the midrib like the spokes of an umbrella left open in a hall.

I had a bottle of Indian ink and a steel nib that had belonged to her husband for writing up the picking tallies, and I was told to hatch, not shade. Every lobe got its own slant of lines, following the vein out to the edge so the eye would travel the way the sap did. It took three evenings under the lamp in the packing shed. Mrs Pardoe checked each lobe with her thumbnail, the way she checked windfalls, and twice she made me scratch out work I thought was finished.
Her nephew from Hereford came for the cider harvest and asked whether I would put the leaf on the wall of the new tasting room, with the name of the orchard beneath it. I said the leaf was already finished. She agreed, and told me to leave the stem bare, a single line with no hatching, because the stem is the only part of a leaf that never has to hold anything up.
When the frame came back from the printer, the leaf sat in the middle of the sheet with a wide margin of nothing around it, and the stalk ran down past the bottom edge of the page as if someone had walked out of the room without finishing the sentence.
