Mrs Hollis had drawn lace patterns for the Lenton mill for thirty-one years, and she still pinned her paper to the board with the same three brass tacks her father had given her. The order that came up from the warehouse that October was a leaf sprig, three leaves on a single stalk, to be pricked out for the Calais machines. Nobody wanted it plain. The buyer wrote back asking for more scroll, more wave, more feather along the edges, as if a leaf could be dressed up like a Sunday coat.

Her apprentice, a lad called Dev who came in on the bus from Radford, thought the work was a waste of good ink. He sat at the end bench with his tea going cold and ruled straight lines for the bobbins while she filled the leaves one curl at a time. "Nothing grows like that," he said on the third evening. She didn't look up. "Nothing grows in a warehouse either, love, and they still want it on a hanky."
The sprig was finished on the last night of the month, when the mill lights went off one floor at a time across the road and the city settled under the sodium glow. She inked the final stem and sat back. Dev leaned over, squinting at the three leaves, each one a different weather: one rippled like water, one feathered like a wing, one heavy with spirals that seemed to turn if you looked away.
"Which one's yours?" he asked. She tapped the smallest, the one at the bottom with the tight coil. "That one. The other two are just showing off."
