The photograph shows a full arm sleeve from the shoulder down to the wrist, shown from four angles. The wedding bread was still warm when the miller's daughter, Tamsin Harrow, found the garden gate standing open. Nobody in Little Wending had planted anything there for forty years, yet the path beyond it was thick with flowers, round as plates and bright as coins, each one turning slowly toward the sun the way sunflowers do when no one is watching.

Her groom, Edmund, had gone ahead to the church with his brothers, and the whole village was already singing in the square. Tamsin stepped between the stalks. Every bloom had a ring of petals, and every ring had a smaller ring inside it, and at the very centre of each was a tiny green eye that seemed to follow her feet. She walked for what felt like an hour, past red blossoms the size of cartwheels and blue ones like frost on a window, until she came to a bench of pale stone where an old woman sat shelling peas into her apron.
"You are late for your own wedding," the woman said, not looking up. "The garden keeps the promise you did not make. Pick one flower and it will walk you home. Pick the wrong one and you will walk here again, every year."
Tamsin looked at the flowers. Some were dark and tangled with leaves, others so light they seemed about to lift off the ground. She chose none of them. She sat down beside the old woman, took a pea from the bowl, and cracked it open.
Inside was a small green eye, blinking.
When she finally walked into the church, the bells had stopped and Edmund was pale with worry. She carried no flower at all, only a single pea pod wrapped in her handkerchief, and when she gave it to him he laughed so hard that the vicar had to wait for him to stop.
