Octopus tattoo on a lower leg
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A large octopus with its head near the top of the calf and tentacles curling down towards the ankle. The head uses fine dotwork stippling and linework, while the tentacles are solid black with white highlights and small dot details. The photograph is taken outdoors on grey pavement, with the lower leg and black trainers filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The tide-clerks of Orrenhythe keep their ledgers in ink pressed from the old octopus, and you were the youngest apprentice sent down the slipway at dusk to fetch it. Nobody told you the beast would be awake. It rose from the weed beneath the quay like a slow thought, its head dotted all over with stars the way the night sky looks through a sieve, and it regarded you with one eye the colour of wet slate.

Your master had warned you about the tentacles. They were black as tar where they lay on the stones, and each one had a pale stripe along its back where the lamplight caught it, like a seam of salt. You knelt, held out the copper pot, and waited. The creature did not take the pot. Instead it laid one arm across your ankle, cool and heavy, and pressed a single sucker to the bone as if reading it.
Something in you knew it was counting. Every tide-clerk in Orrenhythe owed a debt to the sea, and the debts were kept in dots on the creature's brow: one for every boat that had gone out and not come back. You had never counted them. You began now, lips moving, and reached the number of your own father's name before the arm let go.
You filled the pot without speaking. When you climbed back up the slipway, the ink was warm in your hands, and the first line you wrote that night was a single dot, small and black, at the very top of the page.
