Fine line tulip on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single tulip bloom sits at the top of a thin, broken stem, with one long, tapered leaf sweeping down the forearm. The linework is delicate and uniform, with the bloom shaded in soft grey to give it some depth. The tattoo is shown in black ink against pale skin and a white painted brick background, with the hand hanging loosely at the lower left.

The gale took the top off the third row on a Tuesday, and by the time Nell Harker had walked the length of the dyke with her boots full of brine, the field looked like someone had combed it the wrong way. Red and white heads lay snapped along the furrows. Only one bloom had held, a deep plum-coloured cup on a stem that had cracked halfway up and hung there by its skin.

Her father used to say the lighthouse at Gannet Point kept the boats honest, and the tulips kept the wind honest, which was his way of saying nothing made sense unless you looked at it long enough. He had been dead four winters. The light still turned every fourteen seconds over the mudflats, and she counted it from the kitchen while she bound the broken stem to a length of bamboo with green thread.

Dolan from the packing shed came up the track on his bicycle with a lamp on the handlebars, though it was not yet dark. He looked at the bundle in her hands and laughed, not unkindly. 'That won't last the night in a jar,' he said. 'It's gone, Nell. Cut it and let it go.' She didn't argue. She carried it instead along the sea wall to the foot of the tower, where the keeper's widow left a bucket of water on the step for the gulls.

At the top the lamp was already warming, and the bloom, when she set its stem in the water beside the iron rail, opened a little more in the heat, the way they do. The single leaf swept out over the dark water like a hand reaching for the beam. She stood there until the light came round and touched the petals, and for a moment the whole flower glowed the colour of a struck match before the beam swung on towards France.
