Hanging boxing gloves on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of black boxing gloves hangs by their laces from the top of the frame, with the laces drawn as fine lines running upward. The gloves are shaded in black and dark grey with strong highlights along the padding, giving them a rounded, three-dimensional look. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper arm against a plain black t-shirt, with a few faint tattoos visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your father hangs the gloves on the nail above the range the week the pit closes, not because he is finished with them but because the nail is there and your mother has stopped asking him to take them down. They have been black since before you were born, the stitching gone shiny where his thumbs used to rest. Two gloves, laced together at the cuff, turn slowly in the draught from the back door as if they are still deciding which way to swing.

You are nineteen and you know the words to every bout he ever lost, because he tells them to the wireless. Ring, bell, the Nelson Street hall with its tin roof drumming in the rain, a crowd that smelled of coal dust and Woodbines. He never made the titles. He made the rent, mostly, and then he made the shift at the Dalloway seam until the roof came down in the spring of the strike and nothing was owed to anyone any more.

The turn comes on a Saturday. You take the gloves down to clean them and find the lining of the left one has been stitched with a name in red thread, your grandfather's, and under it a date you do not recognise. You sit on the back step with them across your knees. Inside, your father is singing badly to the kettle. You do not tell him. You lace the gloves together again, cross them the way they were, and hang them back on the nail so the light still falls across the padding.
