Octopus tattoo on the thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large octopus with a domed head, a single visible eye and long curling tentacles covered in round suckers. The tattoo is drawn in bold black outlines with light grey fill and little shading, and the composition wraps the body across the outer thigh. The photo has a warm sepia tone and shows a hand resting on the hip above the tattoo.

Rain came sideways through the gap between the awnings at Caddick Street market, and Maud Tennant had stopped trying to keep the slab dry. The last octopus of the morning lay on the ice with its arms tucked under it like a dropped umbrella. Nobody had bought it at six, nobody at eight. "Too ugly for a Sunday," the lad from the bakery had said, and taken a bun instead.

At noon she picked it up to slide it into the bin, and it wound one arm around her wrist, not hard, the way a child holds a sleeve. The suckers pressed cold rings into her skin, one after another, a neat row of small seals. She stood there in the drip while the other traders packed up around her, and the octopus turned its one dark eye towards the pier end, where the rain was thickest.
"Go on, then," she said. "Where to?" The arm loosened. It slid over the edge of the stall, down the wet cobbles, and into the gutter that ran to the harbour. She followed as far as the railings. Out past the breakwater a grey dome broke the surface, rolled once like a man turning over in bed, and sank.
She went back for her coat and found a faint pale ring printed on the inside of her wrist, already drying at the edges. That evening she ate the bun the lad had left on the counter, which she had never once done, and watched the rain run down the window as if it were looking for something it had dropped.
