Realistic octopus tattoo on the hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A large octopus with shaded, textured tentacles wraps across the back of a hand, with suckers rendered as raised highlights along the arms. The shading is smooth and detailed, moving from deep black to soft grey, with faint warm tones on the body. A partial star and a curled line sit above the octopus, and letters are visible on the fingers.

The tide had been wrong for eleven days, and the harbour council at Lowmoor Deep had stopped pretending otherwise. I was sent down the old pump shaft with a sealed lamp and a hook, because I was the only diver left who had not lost a lung to brine fever. Nobody had warned me the thing in the flooded cistern would be so large, or that it would be watching the lamp before I found the lamp.

It had arms like ship's cable, each one ridged with suckers the size of coins, and its skin slid from ink to ash to a bruised pink wherever my light touched it. It did not attack. It kept rearranging itself around a brass plate bolted to the tiles, a five-pointed star worn soft by years of water, and I understood it had been keeping that plate clean for longer than the council had kept records. Its arms curled over the star the way a man cups a match against the wind.
I radioed up that the cistern was occupied. The clerk asked whether it was hostile. I said no, it was tidying. I unscrewed the plate, and the octopus let me, one sucker at a time lifting away with a sound like a slow breath, and then it turned its eye toward the shaft where faded constellations were painted on the ceiling, the ones nobody living could name anymore.
I carried the plate up the ladder with one cold arm still resting on my wrist, gentle and deliberate, like a hand on a shoulder at a funeral. At the top, the sky over Lowmoor was the colour of wet slate, and for the first time in years a single star showed through the cloud. I held the brass up to it. The arm loosened, and then the black water took it back.
