Jellyfish tattoo on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A jellyfish with a rounded bell and long trailing tentacles is outlined in black on pale skin. The linework is fine and even, with stippled dotwork shading across the bell and along the tentacles to suggest volume. The photograph is taken in black and white, with the tattoo running diagonally across the frame against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jellyfish came in on the spring tide, the way they do after a week of westerlies, and Dad stood on the slipway with a galvanised bucket and would not let me touch it. The bell was as wide as my two hands and so clear that I could read the pier lamp through it. Behind it trailed the tentacles, long and thin as cotton thread, and every one had a fine fringe of smaller threads along its length, as if someone had gone down the lines with a needle and a steady hand.

Mr Penhallow from the aquarium came down in his waders, crouched over the bucket and squinted. He said it was a barrel jelly and not a stinger, though it would sting you if you were foolish enough to lift it out. He counted the arms aloud, eleven of them, and wrote the number in a notebook with a pencil he kept behind one ear. Then he looked at me over his glasses and asked whether I wanted to be the one to take it back out, and I said yes before Dad could argue.

We walked it round to the low rocks at Porthcurno, the bucket heavy with seawater and the thing inside turning slowly, dragging its lines through the weed. When I tipped it over the edge the bell folded, then opened again, and it sank in a long soft way, trailing its threads behind it like a thought that hadn't finished.

Dad said the sea doesn't keep things, it only lends them for a while. I stood on the rock until the light went flat and I couldn't see the pale shape any more, only the bucket in my hands, which still smelled of salt and nothing else.
