A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wasps had found the windfalls before we did, so Uncle Tomas and I walked the old Discovery rows with a bucket between us and a stick for the worst of them. He carried the orchard the way other men carry a bad knee, aware of it every hour and unwilling to say so. Along the wall the Bramleys hung heavy and dull green, and the late sun came through the leaves in coins that slid over our boots.

He picked up a fallen apple and turned it in his cracked hands. Round the stalk there was a ring of dark freckles, and he showed me how they spread in a loop, curling inward like thread wound too tight. He had seen the same shape on a sleeve in the Leeds market years back, stitched in green silk on a man selling cheap cassettes, and he had never forgotten it. Some of the dots, he said, were for the people who had gone, and the rest were for the ones still picking.

I told him the buyer from Hereford would pay for the land by Michaelmas, and that the trees were too old to carry much longer. He nodded at the ladder propped against the Bramley, as if I had answered a question he had not asked. Then he climbed it himself, slowly, one rung at a time, and shook the top branch until a shower of leaves and small hard fruit came down around me.

I gathered what I could into the bucket. When I looked up he was sitting in the crook of the tree with his palms open on his knees, watching the light go gold across the far rows, and I left the ladder where it stood.
