Open book and rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows an open book with blank, wavy-lined pages, topped by a pink heart framed by black scrolls. Below the book sits a pink and blue rose-like flower with a yellow centre and green leaves. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills in pink, blue, green, yellow and tan give it a classic traditional look, and the design is centred on the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Frost had kept the lane white since Sunday, and Nell Garrow had walked the ewes down to the bottom field twice before the light gave up. In the kitchen the stove ticked as it cooled. Her father's accounts book lay open on the table where she had left it the night before, its pages ruled in his square pencil until the entries ran out in October.

She had meant to close it. Instead she turned past the last line to the paper beyond, which was blank and faintly wavy where the damp had got into it. Her father had always said a farm kept its own weather in the ledger: rain on the Tuesday, the heifer lost in the hedge, the rose bush by the gate cut back to two buds. She found herself reaching for the pencil.

She wrote the date. Then, because nothing else came, she wrote that the lane was white, that the ewes were all in, that the bantam hen had started laying under the hay bales again. Her hand was clumsy and the pencil kept snapping its point. Halfway down the page she realised she was writing to him, the way you might talk to someone who was only out at the far gate.

At dawn she went out with the feed bucket. A single rose hip still hung red on the gatepost, and above the frost the sky had gone the colour of a washed blue shirt. When she came back in she turned the ledger over and found the next page already dated, with a space left beneath it, as if someone might want to answer.
