Stacked books and flowers on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A stack of four books, with brown, blue, red and yellow covers and ribbon bookmarks, sits beneath two red five-petalled flowers with dark centres and green leaves. The bold black outlines and flat fills give the design a classic traditional look, with some grey shading on the book pages and spines. The tattoo is centred on a leg, with other tattoos, including an owl, partly visible at the edges of the frame.

The last dry shelf in Harrowgate Deep is yours now, and the lamp above it hums the way the old ones did before the grid went quiet. You run your thumb along the spines of four books stacked on a crate lid: brown leather, blue cloth, red board, yellow-edged paper, each tied with a ribbon that has long since faded to the colour of weak tea. Someone pressed two red flowers into the top volume a century ago, and the petals still hold their shape.

The archive council wants them sealed in the cold vault with everything else that cannot be read by machines. Pell, the foreman, says a book is just a battery that forgot to die. You don't argue. Above the door a carved owl keeps watch over the reading room, the only thing down here that never asked for a charge. You open the top book at its ribbon and read a line aloud to the empty dome, about a woman who waited at a station for a train cancelled before she was born, and who bought a flower from the same seller every morning anyway.
Eleven days later the council's men arrive with their trolleys. You have already slipped the four books inside your coat. Past the rusted gate you climb to the ridge where the old roads cross, and you set them down on a flat stone with the ribbons spread out. The sky is the colour of slate. A small blue-tipped bird lands on the wall beside you and tilts its head at the open page.
You leave the books weighted with stones and walk back down without looking. Below, the lamp in the vault goes out, but up here the pages keep lifting in the wind, slowly, and someone who is not you will have to decide what to read next.
