Stacked old books on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A stack of about six old hardback books, with worn covers, raised bands and creased spines, runs vertically down the side of the ribcage. The linework is soft and the shading is detailed, using smooth grey gradients and dark shadows to give the books weight and depth. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin, with a dark shirt at the top edge of the frame.

Margaret came in on a Thursday with a duster and a face like a shut door. She ran the bar now, and she had opinions about clutter. "You're not keeping those," she said. He said he was not keeping them. He was only moving them, which she accepted with a grunt.
He opened the top one on the trolley and found the page for 14 September 1958. A name in his own handwriting, Margaret Lowe, two dances, one with a man called Frank who trod on her hem. He had written "Frank, bad feet, lovely laugh" in the margin, and he had forgotten he'd ever done it.
Margaret read it over his shoulder. She said nothing for a long time. Then she lifted the ledger out of his hands, tucked it under her arm, and said the floor needed mopping before the lunchtime lot came in. He watched her climb the stairs with it, and he understood the books were not going anywhere after all.
