Fine line black tattoo of an open book above the word wanderer in script, on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm.

Open book and wanderer on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a small open book with fanned pages and visible page edges, drawn in thin black linework with minimal shading. Below it, the word wanderer is written in lowercase cursive script in the same black ink. The image is a close, softly lit shot of the inner wrist and open palm against a pale, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mum, the tower block lift is broken again, so I've been climbing the fourteen floors with the box of your old paperbacks balanced on my hip. Mrs Okafor on eleven says hello and asks after you every time, and I tell her you're somewhere warm with a view of the sea, which is more or less the truth. The library van has been coming on Thursdays since the spring, parked by the bins with its hazard lights blinking, and I have a card now, the blue one with the cracked corner.

I found the book you used to read to me, the one with the fox who leaves the village at night and comes back with stories in his coat pockets. The spine had split right down the middle. I took it to the repair stall at the market and the man there, with his magnifier and his tea gone cold, glued it back together and wouldn't take money for it. He said anyone who carries a book that far deserves a clean binding. I didn't tell him I'd only carried it up the stairs.

I've started drawing in the margins of the library copies, which I'm sure is a crime. Little open books, pages fanned like they're about to take off, and under them I write the word you always said I was: wanderer. Nobody's caught me yet. When the van comes next week I'm going to ask the driver where the route goes after the coast road, because I think I'd like to see it, and I'll send you a postcard of whatever I find there. Love, Ruth.
