Sailboat outline on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sailboat drawn in single black outline, with two sails, a pennant at the masthead and a hull with a deck line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits on the wrist below a clenched fist. The black and white photograph is taken against a dark wooden surface.

The ferry to Inishmore had stopped running for the winter, so Declan Murrin rowed his father's old dinghy out past the harbour wall himself, cursing the wind the whole way. The boy who sold him the boat had said it was sound. It was sound in the way a bucket is sound. By the time he reached the mooring buoy his palms were blistered and the tide had turned against him like a dog that had decided he was prey.

He had come for his sister's sailboat. She had built it from driftwood and an old bedsheet the summer before she left for Glasgow, a little thing with a red pennant she tied to the masthead and a deck line she painted with a brush made from a cat's tail. Nobody had sailed it since. It sat on the mooring like a question nobody wanted to answer.

He found it half full of rainwater and a single gull feather, the pennant still snapping. He bailed with a cracked enamel mug, shouting at nothing, and when the hull finally rode level he sat in the stern and let the boat drift where it liked. Behind him the island shrank to a grey thumbprint on the water. Ahead, the light was coming through the cloud in long pale fingers.

He lifted the sail and it filled with a sound like someone clapping slowly in another room. Somewhere on the mainland, Orla would be waking to the first real frost, and she would find a note on her kitchen table in his terrible handwriting: the boat is still afloat, come and get it yourself.
