Open window with a tree on the upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two casement windows swung open, with a bare tree in full leaf-less outline filling the view between them. The linework is fine and the tree and background are built up with soft shading and stippled texture. The image is black and grey, and the photograph is taken from behind, showing the design centred on bare skin with hair falling at the top of the frame.

The lamplighter's daughter had her hand on the latch when the bells of St Ottery began to strike two, and she counted them the way her mother had taught her, slowly, so the tree beyond the canal would have time to hear.

The tree stood alone past the last gasworks, the only one for three miles, bare as wire against the sodium glow. People said a widow had planted it so she could see something grow from her attic before she died, though nobody could say which widow or when. Everyone in Harrowgate Lane had a window that faced brick, and they had long ago stopped wondering what lay on the other side of it.
She had lost her brother to the fever in January, and the house had gone quiet in the way that makes a person listen for things that will never come back. So she pushed both casements wide. The cold came in like a dog let off a chain. Between the two open sashes the tree held its black branches up to the city, and she thought it leaned a little towards her, the way a man leans when he is about to say something he has practised.
In the morning her father climbed to the attic and found the window still open. Frost had grown over the sill in fern shapes, and in the middle of them sat a single green shoot no longer than a thumb. Down in the lane the children were already gathering under the bare sycamore, pointing at the shadow the window had thrown across the cobbles, and nobody thought to close it.
