Pull that curtain across, love, and keep your voice down. The storm has taken the lights and it will give them back when it's had its fill, so we may as well pass the time. There was a smith in Halifax called Abel Stott who worked nights under the moor, and one winter the sky came knocking at his forge.

The sky had dropped its bolt in a quarrel with the hills and wanted it back. It asked Abel for a new one. He hammered it from a broken horseshoe, heating the iron until it glowed like marmalade held up to a lamp. The metal would not lie flat on the anvil. Each blow pushed it sideways, so it came out in shelves, stepped down like a cellar ladder, so the sky could climb down it without tearing its coat.

When he carried it up to the top of the moor, the sky looked at it a long while and said it was too heavy to throw whole. Abel said, 'Then take the top two steps and leave me the bottom, for I need a point to light my pipe by.' The sky laughed, and the laugh was thunder, and it took the top steps home. The bottom stayed stuck in the peat, still warm, and the farmers say the wheat grows gold above it every summer.

Hear that? That's the generator catching. Mind the drip by the sluice, Frank, and go and tell Sister the lights are coming back on.
