Orange mask with angry eyes on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an orange mask with heavy black eyelids and dark pupils that look angry, outlined in bold black linework. A flat orange fill dominates the design, with small black areas for the eyes and pupils. It sits centred on the upper arm against plain skin, with a dark garment and chair in the background.

Right, sit closer to the stove, because the frost has got into the pump again and I'll not be going out for water till it's thawed. You'll have heard about Ned Harrow's scarecrow. No? Then listen. Ned had a sack-headed thing standing in the top field, all straw and a flour-bag face, and the crows didn't care a jot for it. They sat on its shoulders and pecked the seed corn from under its boots.

So one January, when the snow lay thick as porridge, Ned's granddaughter Bess took a tin of rust-red paint from the barn and painted a mask onto a folded piece of old feed sacking. Orange as a fox in a hard frost. She gave it two black eyes, heavy-lidded and narrowed, and a scowl that could curdle milk. Then she tied it over the scarecrow's face and went indoors to her supper.

Come morning, the crows were gone, every last one. The fox that had been taking hens from the lower coop had stopped too, because the thing in the top field was glaring at it across the frozen furrows with the look of something that had seen better foxes and eaten them for breakfast.

Here's the turn, mind. Next spring Ned tried to take the mask off for washing, and it wouldn't come. Bess swears she never stitched it on, though she never owned a needle in her life. Some say the scarecrow still stands up there, scowling at the weather. And if you pass the top field at dusk in winter, you'll feel it watching you, and you'll walk a bit faster. Now pass me that poker.
