Paper plane with red kiss mark on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo is a simple outline of a paper plane drawn in a single thin dark line, with no shading or fill. A small red lip print sits on one wing, providing the only colour in the design. The plane is shown against plain pale skin, with a dark maroon sleeve at the left edge of the frame.

The envelope came back to the post office in Hull with a wing crease I recognised, so I knew before I opened it that Tomas had folded it himself. He never wrote proper letters. He folded them into planes and threw them from the top deck of the 14 bus, and whoever found them in the gutter was supposed to read them and throw them on. This one had landed under a bench outside the chip shop on Anlaby Road.

Inside there was only a line in biro, pressed so hard it had torn the paper at the corner: Meet me where the trams used to turn, Friday, nine. And beneath it, a red smudge the exact shape of his mouth, because he had kissed the page the way he kissed everything, carelessly and all at once.
I went on Friday. The trams had gone years ago and the loop was just tarmac and a broken bollard, but I stood there until ten past nine with my hands in my pockets, watching a paper plane come sliding down out of the dark from the direction of the bridge. It hit the kerb, skidded, and stopped against my shoe.
It was blank this time. I picked it up and smoothed it flat. On the back, in the same hard pencil, he had written only: you're late, and then, underneath, a second kiss, fainter, as if he had changed his mind about how much to say.
