Orange gerbera daisies on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a hand resting on bare skin beside a colour tattoo on the inner upper arm. The tattoo shows three orange gerbera daisies with yellow centres and red-brown ring details, set on dark teal leaves that curve across the arm. Shading is soft and smooth, with the petals outlined in darker tones, and a second, darker tattoo is partly visible further up the arm.

"Cut on the slant," she said, "or they drink like a dog and die by dinner." Her secateurs went through each stem with a small click. The leaves on the far side of the glass always turned a shade bluer in August, the dark green of a bottle held up to the light, and she said that was the sea wanting in.
The buyer came on the Thursday, a florist from Maidstone with a van full of empty buckets. When his van had gone she sat down on an upturned crate and didn't get up for a long time.
"Council's buying the land," she said eventually. "Wants it for houses." She picked one last flower, a small one with its petals still tight, and pushed it into my palm. "Look properly. Every one of those middles is hundreds of little flowers packed together. Nobody sees the crowd, only the face."
I took it home in my coat pocket, wrapped in a page of the Kent Messenger, and pressed it inside my atlas at the page for Kent. It is still there, gone the colour of old brick, and I can tell you exactly where the sea comes in.
