Poppy and marigold shoulder piece
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large floral tattoo covers the shoulder and upper back, centred on a red poppy with a grey centre and dark outline. Smaller orange marigolds and dark green leaves trail down the arm and across the shoulder blade. The bare back, soft brown lighting and warm beige background keep the tattoo as the main focus.

The landlady at Gull Rock House has given you the attic room because the sea wind gets in everywhere else, and by the second week you have stopped minding the damp in the skirting. Mrs Pargeter keeps marigolds in a tin bath on the back step, orange as egg yolk, and she says they will keep the slugs off the sweet peas if you talk to them nicely. You do not believe her. You bring her the tea anyway.

On Thursdays the postman leaves nothing for the top floor, so you walk the cliff path to the churchyard above Saltcombe, where someone in 1919 planted a bank of poppies between the graves and nobody has had the heart to weed them out. The red is so thin in the wind it looks like tissue. You kneel with the trowel you borrowed and dig out the bindweed, and the grey hearts of the flowers nod at you as though they have been waiting for someone to notice.
The letter comes on the fourth Thursday. It is in a hand you have not seen since your brother went out to Canada, and it says only that the ferry is running again and he will be on it Saturday, if you still have the room with the window. You read it twice on the steps. Then you go down to the kitchen and tell Mrs Pargeter you will need the good sheets aired.
She does not look up from the marigolds. "Take a bunch for the table," she says. "Orange is for welcome. Red is for remembering. You'll want both."
