Orange roses across the ribs and hip
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several orange roses in different stages of bloom, with buds, green leaves and thin stems wrapping up the side of the torso from the hip towards the ribs. The roses are shaded with smooth gradients of yellow and orange, with teal and purple washes behind the foliage that add depth. The design is arranged vertically along the side of the body, with the largest rose sitting near the hip and a smaller rose near the top edge of the frame.

Nell poled the Gilded Wren off the mud at Keadby before the light had properly come, the rope still wet across her palms. Behind her the bank was grey and empty. Ahead the river ran teal under the lock gates, and the cutting Mrs Harrow had given her lay wrapped in sacking at her feet, its thorns poking through the cloth like a fistful of pins.

Mrs Harrow had said orange roses would not take for a river woman unless they were planted where the water could see them. So at the first lock Nell lashed the cutting to the gunwale with binding wire, and at the second she pressed its roots into a tin of wet silt scooped from the bank. Each morning a new leaf unfolded, greener than the last, and each evening the water turned purple beneath the stern and the leaves caught the colour like wet paint.
By the Ouse junction a bud had opened, the shade of marmalade held up to a lamp. Two more came with the tide. Bargemen on the Humber laughed at the flowers on her hull until the fog came down thick as wool and a tug lost its way in the channel. Its captain rowed out in a dinghy, took one look at the glowing blooms, and followed them home through the murk, then swore he would never call a rose foolish again.
She brought the Wren back on the spring flood with the largest rose nodding at the stern. Her father's cart still stood at the top of the bank, its wheel mended, and on the step sat a fresh tin of silt with a small green shoot already pushing through it, waiting for the next cutting.
