Cowboy boot, horseshoe and rose on the side

Traditional · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A full-colour tattoo shows a tan cowboy boot with a pink-and-purple hat on top, set within a blue horseshoe. A red rose with green leaves sits at the upper left, with a small yellow star and green foliage below. Bold black outlines and solid fills dominate, and the design is photographed on the side of a torso above jeans.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boots came up the Lantern Creek road at dusk with nobody visibly in them, or so Hettie Fairlie told the Sunday congregation, and she was not a woman who told tall tales. Tan leather, tooled with rows of little stars, a red lightning bolt stitched up each shaft. Cass Doolin had left them on her step the night before he rode out for Abilene, still owing her father eleven dollars for re-shoeing a grey mare two winters back.

Her father had nailed a horseshoe over the forge door forty years earlier, open end up so the luck wouldn't spill, and Hettie had never once thought to turn it. She set the boots beside the anvil and hung Cass's hat on the peg beneath the shoe, a pink and purple thing gone soft with rain. Outside, the rose her mother planted by the trough still bloomed red in the frost, which her mother had insisted was a sign of nothing but stubbornness.

The week after, the mare threw a shoe on the north pass and Hettie walked her home over four miles of ice, cursing the whole way. In April a letter came from Abilene with eleven dollars folded inside and a gold star pressed flat between the pages, the kind that once decorated a sheriff's coat. Hettie read it twice at the bench, then took the horseshoe down, turned it open end down, and hung it back up. Let the luck fall where it liked. She had a new heel to cut for a pair of boots that were owed a walk.
