Orca, plumeria and sea turtles on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an orca breaching above a blue ocean with pale sparkles, with pink and yellow plumeria and a pink hibiscus flower in the foreground. Two sea turtles swim in the lower section, one with a detailed, shaded shell. The orca has bold dark outlines and smooth shading, while the turtles and flowers show more detailed colour modelling, and the image is shown as three views of the same forearm piece.

The lift at Kestrel House had been dead for eleven days when Mrs Okafor on the fourteenth floor decided the sea would have to come up to her. She kept a plumeria cutting in a yoghurt pot on the sill, a slip her son had posted from Honolulu wrapped in cling film, and that week it had put out two pale leaves, which she took as a sign of something.

Dariusz from the ninth floor carried her shopping up the stairs in exchange for a lesson in making the plant bloom. He had painted the stairwell wall the blue of a swimming pool with his uncle's leftover emulsion, and above the landing, where the damp came through, he had put a whale breaching in black and white, with stars in the corners because he said the whale would need them to find its way home.

On the twelfth night the storm came off the estuary and the car park flooded to the bottom of the bins. Mrs Okafor watched from the balcony as the water took the bicycles, the trolleys and a child's plastic dinosaur, and then two green turtles came drifting past the lamp posts as if they had always lived there. Dariusz swore he saw the whale surface between the bollards, but he was nine and he swore a great deal. She picked a bloom from the pot, pink at the tips and yellow at the heart, and dropped it into the flood, where it turned slowly and sailed off towards the sea that had never been so near.
