Orchid sprig tattoo on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large orchid bloom sits at the top of the design, with a second flower and a closed bud descending along a thin stem below it. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft grey shading in the petals and a light wash that gives the blooms depth. The design is set against a pale background, and the arm is shown in close crop with a blue garment at the right edge.

The orchid came out on the supply boat in a crate of wet moss, and Ada Lunt carried it up the ninety-one steps of Scarrow light without once tilting the box. Her husband had kept the lamp for eleven winters and had never asked the mainland for anything, so when the boatman grumbled about the weight she told him to mind his own oars.

She set the plant on the sill of the lantern room where the glass held the most warmth, and each evening before the wick was trimmed she turned its face towards the lamp. The flower was large and pale, with a throat like a folded letter, and the stem bent down from it carrying two more blooms and a bud no bigger than a thumbnail. By December the stem had reached the iron rail and was threading through the bars as if it meant to go out over the water.
In the January gale the supply boat did not come, and the paraffin ran low on the third night. Ada climbed the stair with a shawl over her head and found the lamp guttering. She stood beside the orchid because there was nothing else to stand beside, and looked out at the black sea where ships had gone under in weather like this. The bud at the end of the stem, shut since the day it arrived, had split a finger's width and showed a thread of gold.
She did not know whether the lamp or the flower was giving the light, and she did not stop to work it out. She fed the last of the oil to the wick, held the glass steady in both hands, and kept the beam turning until the grey came up behind the headland and the lifeboat's lantern showed on the water. In spring the bud closed again, small and tight, and Ada still turned the plant towards the sea each evening before the lamp was lit.
