Shaded rose and butterflies on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo shows a shaded rose in full bloom at the centre, with two butterflies, one above and one below, and curling ink flourishes. The rose uses soft grey gradients and fine detail in its petals, while the butterfly wings are shaded to suggest depth. The design sits on a curved limb against a dark, out-of-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags had been told the fair would not stop for rain, and by Thursday the ground at Hollin Green had turned to porridge around the dodgems. She sat on an upturned crate outside the paint wagon with a jar of grey wash and a brush she had cut down to three hairs, trying to make a rose look as though it had been out in the weather a long time.

Her father had painted every wagon in the row with bright reds and gold scrollwork until the year the reds ran out and the bank took the gold. Now the Ferris car was all charcoal and silver, and the only colour left was in the ledger he kept under his cap. Mags worked with what they had: black ink, a tin of white, and the flourishes she had learned from him, curling off the panels like smoke that had decided to stay.

On the last night before the lorries came, a boy from the generator crew stopped at the wagon to ask what she was doing. She said she was giving the old tent a proper send-off. He looked at the grey rose on the wall and said it looked like it might drop a petal if you breathed on it. She didn't tell him that was the point.

At first light the crew loaded the rides, and Mags climbed onto the roof of the wagon with her last wash. Two butterflies went on either side of the bloom, one dark above and one dark below, their wings shaded thin as cigarette paper. Her father came out with his tea, looked up, and said nothing, which from him was the same as a cheer.
