Shaded roses and buds on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large open rose at the upper section, a smaller rose lower down, and two closed buds with leaves and thin thorned stems. The linework is fine and the petals are built up with soft grey shading and stippled texture. The design is entirely black and grey and fills a vertical strip of the forearm against a dark padded surface.

The roses on the cabin roof had been Hannah Pell's doing, carried aboard in clay pots from a nursery at Stourport, and by the second summer they had grown over the chimney and down the side of the hull. Her father had said a rose wants a hard winter and a thorn for company. When the flood came up the Severn in October, the pots slid and cracked against the bank, and the water lapped at the cabin step for three days. Hannah sat on the roof with the last two buds in a tin cup, saying nothing to the river, because she had learned that the river only listened to the rain.
On the fourth morning a lighter drifted past with a boy aboard, sodden and shouting for a rope. She threw him the line from the roof, the way her father had taught her, and he hauled himself onto the gunwale. He had been sheltering in the wrong reed bed. Neither of them spoke about the roses, but he came back in spring with a cutting wrapped in wet sacking and a thorn pushed through his own thumb to show he meant it.
By June the bush had two blooms the size of fists, and the buds beside them opened slowly, as if they had been waiting for permission. Hannah cut one for the boy and tucked it behind his ear. The river kept its own counsel, as rivers do, and the roses went on climbing the hull.
