Ornamental dotwork tattoo on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ornamental design sits on the forearm, built from a central paisley-like motif with scrolling swirls and a cluster of small flowers at the top. The linework is fine and the shading is built up from dense dots, giving a soft, textured look. The image is entirely black and grey, and the tattoo fills the right side of the frame with the torso and waistband visible behind it.

The fiddler at Lower Stannard would not play the last reel until the floor was swept, and nobody knew why until the summer Marta Holm came up from the coast with a pedlar's cart and a shawl folded in brown paper. She opened it on the trestle in the hall. Its border was a curl of leaves that ended in a bunch of small flowers, and at its heart a teardrop shape bent back on itself like a ram's horn. Every inch was made of dots, thousands of them, so that from across the room the cloth looked grey as rain.

She said her grandmother had worked it for a dancer who never came home from the fair at Ottery. Each dot was a step counted out loud while the needle went in. The women of the village admired it. Eli Varden, the fiddler, took it as a dare. He said he could play a tune that would make the pattern move, but he would not say which tune, only that it had to be played after midnight with the shawl laid out on the boards and nobody watching but the one who would dance on it.
So they danced, the two of them, and the fiddle went round and round. By the third turn the swirls were showing on the floorboards in pale dust, and the flowers opened at the corners where the lamps did not reach. When Eli stopped, the hall was quiet and the shawl was blank, not a dot left on the cloth.
In the morning Marta's cart was gone, and on the trestle lay the shawl again, folded in its paper. Eli unwrapped it and found one new dot near the ram's horn, as small and black as a single step, and he has not swept the floor since.
