Sunflower tattoo on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large sunflower sits on the side of the torso, with its dark centre and shaded petals radiating outwards. The soft shading and blended greys give the petals depth and volume. The warm, slightly faded photo tone and the cropped composition centre the tattoo against the bare skin above the waistband.

The sunflowers came up in the wrong place, which is how my father always said the good things happened. Between the foghorn shed and the wall of the lamp house, where nothing but sea pinks had any business, three stalks pushed through the crushed shell in June, and by August they stood taller than the rail. He had sown them from a paper packet bought in Berwick, mostly to annoy the gulls, he said.

Nobody on Skerry Holm ever watched a sunflower head turn. You have to keep an eye on them through a whole day. Mine went round like a slow clock, east at six, south by noon, and by evening they had bowed west towards the mainland with their faces heavy and brown. I used to sit on the step with my tea and check them against the light, as if they owed me an answer.

The winter he went, the lamp was automated and the keepers were gone, but I stayed on in the cottage because the rent was nothing and I had nowhere else to be. In the spring the sunflowers came back from seed they had dropped themselves, scattered over rocks where I had never planted anything. I cut the best head in October, dried it on the windowsill, and rubbed the seeds loose into my palm.

The relief boat comes on Thursdays. Last week the mate's boy stood on the slipway and asked why the flowers all faced the lamp at night. I told him they didn't, then went out and looked, and he was half right, every head tipped towards the beam as if it wanted to be seen. I gave him a fistful of seeds for his mother's garden on the mainland, watched him run up the path, and kept the one dry head for myself.
