Ornamental elephant and motif flash sheet
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A black and white sheet of tattoo design elements arranged around a central elephant covered in dense decorative patterns. The surrounding motifs include paisley and feather shapes, mandalas, flowers, lotus forms, tribal triangles, an eye, an om symbol and square geometric panels, drawn in fine solid black linework and dot-filled detail. The layout is evenly spaced across the sheet, with the elephant as the focal point and the smaller designs used as separate stencil-style elements.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The elephant in Mr Okonedo's travelling show had been painted by his grandmother, or so the story went, and by the time the big top came down in Stockport that autumn, every inch of her grey hide was patterned with paisley and dots and little brass-coloured suns. The canvas was folded into the lorry. The clowns had gone to a care home in Bolton. Only Parvati remained, standing in the wet field with her trunk curled up like a question.

The rain went on for three days. On the fourth, a girl from the village came over the stile with a tin of sheep dip and a torn feather pinned to her coat, and asked whether the elephant was for sale. Mr Okonedo said she was not. The girl said she only wanted to see the patterns close up, because her nan had once told her every line on the animal was a door, and you could walk through any of them if you knew the words.
The old man laughed until he coughed. Then he saw she was serious, and he took her round the back, where the paint was flaking, and showed her the lotus on the left shoulder, the eye behind the ear, the three tribal triangles marching down the foreleg like a row of small mountains. He told her he had never once walked through any of them. She was not disappointed. She traced the dotted border with her thumb and said that sounded like the sort of thing a person could only do with a bit of paint and a lot of patience.
When the lorry finally pulled out, the girl stayed by the gate. Parvati lifted her trunk toward the sky, and the flakes of paint came off in the wind like tiny gold coins, and the girl caught one and kept it in her pocket for the rest of her life.
