Black mandala design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala drawn in solid black on a white background, with a central rosette surrounded by layered, lotus-like petals and an outer ring of scalloped points. The linework uses solid black fills alongside fine hatched and dotted bands, creating strong contrast. The design is centred and fills the square frame evenly.

The Bramleys came early that year, and by the last week of August my uncle Tom had given up pretending he could manage the ladders. I took them for him. Up in the Long Orchard the branches leaned toward the sun under the weight of the fruit, and at night you could hear them creak over the owls.

Tom had a habit of cutting one apple open before he picked the rest. He would take the knife from his belt, halve it across the middle rather than top to bottom, and hold the two pieces to the light. Inside, the pips sat in a neat ring of five, and the flesh around them went pale and sharp. 'Every apple's drawn the same,' he said. 'Somebody just keeps passing the pen.' I never knew what he meant, but I liked the slow way he said it.
The turn came the morning the wasps got into the press house. We had stacked the crates too close, and the sweet juice had dried on the concrete in rings. Tom sat on an upturned bucket staring at the stain, then took a stub of chalk from his pocket and began drawing around it, petal after petal, outward from the centre, until the whole floor bloomed white. He worked until the light turned orange, humming through his teeth.
When he finished he stood back, knees cracking, and said the wasps would never come back over a thing that clever. I don't know if that was true. The next morning I cut my own apple across the middle, found the star waiting inside, and left the chalk where it lay for the rain to take, keeping the pattern in my head instead, which is where he would have wanted it kept.
