Ornamental elephant head on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of an elephant head, facing downwards, sits centrally on the upper back with a lotus-like crown above it. The ears and forehead are filled with mandala-style patterns, and dotted chains with tassel ends hang from the sides. The work is in black ink with fine, even linework and no shading, photographed against bare skin with a white lace top at the edges of the frame.

The silk had frayed again before the bell over the lane had finished ringing. Mohan knelt on the cobbles with the elephant's headpiece across his knees, turning it the way his father had taught him, so the painted ears faced the morning sun. Leela, nine and impatient, sat on the step with a tin of black glass beads and counted them under her breath, losing her place every time a cart rattled past.

Gaj had carried the Diwali procession for thirty-one years. The old painter had stencilled lotus petals across his ears, saying they would shed the rain, and from his temples hung dotted chains that ended in tassels, each weighted with a single bead so the wind could not lift them. Mohan had never told anyone that the weight was the point. An elephant that bows his head under a little silver is one the crowd will stop to bless.
On the morning the chain snapped, Gaj lowered his trunk to the step where Leela sat and lifted the last loose bead from her open palm, gently, as though it were a sweet. She laughed. Mohan saw the crowd's eyes move away from the elephant and settle on the girl, and he understood something his father had never said aloud.
He knotted the broken chain the old way, closed Leela's fingers around the spare bead, and told her to carry it at the front of the line. The left-hand tassel still swings a little longer than the right. Nobody has ever asked him why.
