Ornamental lotus tattoo on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A large symmetrical design fills the back of the neck and upper back, centred on a lotus flower inside a pointed frame. Swirling paisley scrolls, a small diamond motif and mandala-style petals radiate outwards. The design uses fine black linework with stippled dots and soft grey shading, against a plain grey background.

The brass block had to go north by Friday, and it was still giving me the petals wrong. I had carved the lotus eleven times into pear wood before I understood the fault was not in my gouge but in my eye. Every petal wanted to open a fraction too far, like a hand reaching for something it had already let go.

The workshop sat above the fish market in Whitby, and the cotton that came through it went to houses in Bolton and Leeds that wanted their patterns stamped crisp and repeatable. Mr Ambrose, who ran the press downstairs, had no patience for my dreaming. His grandfather had cut the pointed frame that held the flower, and the little diamond at its base was a kite shape my own father had sworn was the easiest thing in the world to get wrong. I had got it wrong every time too.
On the twelfth attempt I stopped drawing the lotus at all. I took the dotting awl the old workers used for shading, pressed it into the wood in thousands of tiny points, and let the grain decide where the light fell. The print came up soft and grey, the petals fading at their edges as if the flower were lifting out of morning fog, and the paisley scrolls looked like they had been blown in by a breeze off the harbour.
Mr Ambrose pinned the sheet to the wall beside the others and said nothing, which from him was praise. On Friday I packed the block in straw and sent it north. The awl stayed in my apron pocket, still tacky with ink, and I found I kept reaching for it all afternoon.
