Ornamental forearm tattoo beside a waistcoat and tie

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A man in a grey waistcoat, blue shirt and gold tie adjusts his tie, with his face and upper body cropped out of frame. His forearm carries an ornamental tattoo with scrollwork and flowing linework, shown with some shading. The dark background keeps the focus on the arm, and small touches of colour appear near the lower forearm alongside the black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had forged scrollwork for thirty-one years in a yard above the Tyne, and he could tell a good curl from a lazy one with his eyes shut. The commission that winter was a pair of gates for a shipowner's house on the hill, and the drawing had come with a note asking for something that looked like it was still growing. He spent a week bending bar stock cold, then hot, until the lines ran out of one another like ivy finding a wall.

His apprentice, a lanky girl called Marisol Dunn who had come to the yard from the Sunderland technical school, watched him hammer the last terminal into a tight spiral. She asked why he never drew the scrolls on paper first. He told her paper lied about weight. A line that looked graceful on a page could sag like wet washing once it had to hold a gate, and the only honest drawing was the one you could lift.

When the gates went up in March, the shipowner's widow walked the length of them twice without speaking. Then she pointed at one curl near the latch, where the iron had been left unpainted, and asked whether it had been a mistake. Pell said it had been a rest, a place where the hand had stopped to think. She nodded and paid him in cash, and that evening Marisol went back up the hill alone and rubbed a little gold leaf into that single spiral so the light caught it at dusk.
