Black and grey sleeve beside a diver watch

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a man's left forearm and hand resting on a denim-clad knee, with a dense tattoo covering the forearm. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey shading with soft, textured tonal areas, and its detail is partly hidden by a steel wristwatch with a black bezel and a dark leather strap beneath it. The background is out of focus and dark, which keeps attention on the arm and watch.

Dad kept the fair's time on a steel diver's watch with a black bezel, and nobody else was allowed to wind it. Every night at ten, when the generator coughed and the Waltzer's bulbs dimmed to amber, he sat on the step of the ticket booth and checked it against the church clock in whatever town we'd pitched in. Mum used to say the watch was the only thing he'd ever been faithful to, which was a joke, and he always laughed at it as if he hadn't heard it before.

The summer I turned eleven, the watch began to run four minutes slow. I took it apart on the caravan table with a matchstick and a jeweller's loupe borrowed from the knife-thrower, and I found nothing wrong except a hair-thin crack in the glass that let the damp in. Dad didn't scold me. He took the watch back, held it up to the nearest bulb so the dial caught the light, and said a diver counts seconds because the water doesn't care how fast you want to come up.

We moved on at the end of August, the rides folded onto flatbeds in the dark. He wouldn't let me carry the watch. At the last field, under a sky with no moon, he set it to the minute and pressed it into my palm. "Keep it running till you find the right harbour," he said. I still have it. It has never been right since, and I have never once wanted it fixed.
