Rose and face tattoos on forearms
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person in a tweed waistcoat and white shirt shows two forearm tattoos, with a shaded rose on the left arm and a bearded male face on the right. The linework and shading are grey and black, and the warm sepia-toned vintage filter softens the whole frame. The composition is a torso-length crop with the face out of frame, and a small tattoo is also visible on one hand.

The frost had got into the well again, so Ada Mott went out at first light with the ash bucket and found the rose still flowering on the north wall of the cowshed, where nothing should have bloomed since Michaelmas. Her grandfather had planted it there the year the bearded man came up the lane with a sack of tools and a debt he would not name.

The stranger carved a face into the byre lintel that autumn, a man with a full beard and his eyes shut, as if he were listening for something under the earth. He told the Motts the face would keep the cattle warm through the dark months, provided nobody asked it for anything in summer. Grandfather asked nothing. He paid in labour instead: mended the gate, reset the pump, sat up with the lambing ewes until the stranger had gone on down the valley road.
Winter came hard that year. Ada's brother Tom wanted the rose cut back to the stone because it drew the wind, and he took the secateurs to it one night while she slept. In the morning the cut stems had sprouted again overnight, and a single pale bloom hung over the byre door, open as candle wax in the snow. A thorn had pricked the carved chin, and a bead of red had run down into the grain of the stone.
Ada cut that bloom herself and laid it on the step, the way her grandfather used to leave bread for a neighbour who never knocked. The cows stood breathing in the warm dark behind the door. Tom came out with his collar up, looked at the petal, and said nothing at all.
