Ornamental hummingbird tattoo design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A hummingbird in mid-flight, drawn in black ink against a white background, with its long beak extended and one wing raised and the other stretched back. The body and wings are filled with fine spiral swirls and curved feather lines, with solid black areas along the back, tail and far wing edge. The design is monochrome and fully outlined, with the bird centred and filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hummingbird is at the open casement again before you have finished tying off the bobbin, its wings a grey blur that Mrs Pascoe would call a smudge on the glass. You have told her nothing about it. She has commissioned a veil for her daughter's wedding, a pattern of wings and spirals, and she has asked for the bird to be worked in black thread against the cream, which no Honiton lacemaker would ever do. You did it anyway, because the bird sat on your wrist last winter and refused to leave.

Its beak is a needle of silk. You watch it dip into the lavender pot on the sill, then turn back to the pillow where the pattern is pinned in a crescent. Every curl you have worked since dawn has come out a little tighter than the one before, as if the thread is learning to hold its breath. The bird tilts its head at the last loop. Nothing else in the room moves.

When the light goes amber you reach for the scissors, and the hummingbird is gone. In its place lies a single black feather across the pattern, its quill inked with the same stroke you have been making all afternoon. You pick it up. It is exactly the width of the thread you have spent the day on, and it is still warm.

You bind the veil in tissue and post it north before the Tuesday coach, and you do not look at the sill again. Some commissions, you have learned, finish themselves.
